Mosquitoes and repellents

Dengue, Japanese encephalitis, yellow fever, malaria, rickettsiosis can be transmitted by the bite of an insect or the bite of a mite.

Mosquitoes can be dangerous... Sometimes...

Some forms of malaria present in Thailand are resistant to chloroquine, sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine, mefloquine and since 2014 to artemisinin. Preventive treatments are therefore ineffective and unnecessary ...
certain protective measures must therefore be respected: long clothing, repellent products for use on the skin and on clothing, electric insecticide diffusers, window closures, etc.

We propose to speak here about repellents.

Our advice: Take with you a repellent based on DEET (N, N-diethyl-mtoluamide):

Purchase in USA or England:

King insect repellent gel, 20%;
Insect Screen family (spray), 25%;
Moustidose repellent lotion infested areas (lotion) 30%; Moustifluid, high risk areas (spray), 30%; Prebutix repellent lotion area, tropical (lotion), 30%;
Ultrathon insect repellent (cream or spray), 34%; Bushman repellent (roll-on-gel, dry-gel or atomizer), 34%;
Insect Screen infested areas adults (spray), 50% Biovectrol Tropic 2, 50%.

Insecticidal biocidal products for the impregnation of permethrin-based clothing, fabrics or mosquito nets are effective. We recommend treating your clothes before departure.

Beyond a concentration of 30%, the use should be reserved for adults and is not recommended for pregnant women. A concentration of 20% is sufficient. Applications should be limited to 3 for adults, 2 for children under 12 and 1 for children under 6 months.
NB: It is wrong to claim that local products bought in Thailand are more efficient. Only the active component and its concentration determines its effectiveness. In Thailand the products offered are based on DEET. Concentrations of 13% and 15% are equally effective at a lower concentration.

We do not recommend using:

     ultrasonic devices, homeopathy, electric racquets, ribbons, paper and sticky stickers without insecticide, vitamin B1;
     mosquito repellent bracelets and ticks;
     essential oils whose effectiveness is less than 20 minutes in general.
